Vicom One-on-One is a new series where we sit down with an Account Executive here at Vicom and pick their brains on what’s happening in their industry. Kenny Bowman shares a story with us that has tremendous value for anyone looking for a technology solution.
It’s not uncommon in our industry for Vicom to be one of multiple vendors that are engaged with a customer on the project. Traditionally, the customer may ask for a proposal from a few companies and then make their decision based on what has been submitted.
In this specific instance, Kenny was working alongside his engineer, Nate Brown to determine the appropriate solutions to provide for the client [Client A]. In this specific example Kenny shared, Client A had a variety of different meeting spaces that required an Audio Visual solution.
A competing vendor had proposed what has become a common trend post-pandemic – A camera/speaker combination that resembles a traditional soundbar used as a one size fits all solution for every room. Kenny explained that on the surface, these solutions can seem appealing due to their simplicity and relatively low investment cost. There are limitations though that need to be considered and certain characteristics of your rooms may likely disqualify these streamlined solutions as an adequate solution.
Through the engineering process, Nate Brown performed a technology shoot-out utilizing a variety of components and combinations. This trial and error process enabled Nate to engineer specific solutions that would meet the client’s needs not just budget-wise but appropriate to the individual needs of the room. While other vendors felt confident in a fast and streamlined solution, Kenny and Nate chose to slow down and ensure that the solution was correct – not convenient. Initially, it was their honesty about the product performance and the system’s functional expectation that led us to win Client A’s trust. “We backed that up with Lab testing and Customer demonstrations. Supported by ‘Over communicating'” Nate Brown tells us.
This illustrates the importance of choosing the right technology partner that understands the unique nature of each of their client’s challenges. Oftentimes, the easiest way is not the right way and short-cuts can lead to future headaches and even bigger challenges than the original.
