Virginia 757 Area Code Overlay

To ensure the local supply of telephone numbers is sufficient, the Virginia State Corporation Commission approved the addition of a new area code – 948 to the geographic area served by area code 757. This process is known as the area overlay code.

Effective April 9th, 2022 the Tidewater region of Virginia will be requiring that all outbound phone calls be dialed with 10 digits versus 7 for local numbers. This means you’ll be required to dial the area code in front of your destination, even if you’re dialing locally. This is a step that all carriers will be taking in preparation for the new area code for the region (984).

This new requirement can have impacts on various devices. Most phone systems should have no problem with implementing this change; however, devices like elevator phones, fire panels, security systems, and other life safety devices may require modification to their programming to accommodate these new requirements. It is best to get in contact with whichever vendors are responsible for such devices to confirm that they’ve been set up in such a way that this will not impact them and if it will mitigate the potential impacts as much as possible.
